We work in pairs or by ourselves to investigate Maths Topics that interest us. Most of us chose a person who had changed the world for the better by using their strength in Maths. Read on to see what we found out.
Algebra - Sophie
One of the main parts of Mathematics is Algebra. Algebra means "reunion of broken parts". There are 3 other main parts of maths they are - number theory, geometry and analysis.
In its most general form Algebra is the study of symbols. There are 2 types of Algebra 1. Elementary algebra. 2. Abstract algebra or modern algebra.
Here is some Algebra.
7-y= 10
1-3y = -14
-3x -7 =12
5x +6 =24
2x+2=8
What is x?
4s+7 =14 sp What is s.
7a + n =27 .
In algebra the X is made like this x
Elementary algebra is essential for any study of maths or science.
Time/ Lunar cycles/Seasons - Gabbie and Libby
The earth is spinning every second but you don't notice. You might be surprised to know that a spot on the surface of the earth is moving at 1, 675 km /h or 465m/s. When NZ can see the sun the other half of the world can see the moon. The moon can go different colours from white to red and the whole room can go fully red. The moon is really big compared to people. Sometimes the moon is only 1/4 but when it gets darker the moon gets bigger. The moon comes out at night. The moon is very bright and it is like a night light. It takes the moon 28 days to go round the earth. It takes 365 days for the Earth to go around the sun. We have 4 seasons and 12 Months so every season takes ... 12 divided by 4 equals 3. Tides are controlled by the moon using gravity... There are two tides each day. The moon's power force pulls on water in the ocean so that there are bulges in the ocean on both sides of the planet.
Pythagorus - Harrison and Daniel
1.Pythagorus was very smart.
2. He was born on the island of Samos.
3. He was interested in Maths, Music and Politics.
4. He died in Metaonitum.
5. He sad that he would go to the moon and write a letter.
6. He went to Pythagoreanism school.
7. This is how to write Pythagorus in Greek.
8. He was a teacher.
9. He was famous for triangles.
Sir Isaac Newton - Sam and Tom
Born in England Issac Newton was very important in Physics, and Mathematics. In 1687 he published Philosophea Naturalises Principia Mathmatic, regarded as one of the best science books of all time. He was born in 1642 and died in 1724. He published 8 major books in his life. He was nighted in 1705. Isaac Newton invented the Atom bomb. He also invented the theory which explains how gravity works after watched an apple fall from a tree. Isaac Newton helped with the development of different types of telescopes and he invented the 3 laws of motion.
1. First Law of motion is - Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.
2. The second law of motion is f=ma
3. The third law of motion is - For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
He was educated by Trinity College in Cambridge. He came from a poor family of farmers. He discovered that the sun is in the middle the solar system.
William Jones - Jacob
Before the appearance of the symbol pi approxomations such as 22/7 and 355/113 had also been used to express the ratio which may have given the impression that it was a rational number. William Jones was a welsh mathematician and was born in 1675 - died in 1749. Pi was't invented in was found.
Pi - Ben
Pi was found/invented by William Jones. The pi is a symbol. William Jones used maths to make the pi. He was a mathematician. Pi = 3.145925359. Pi is used for measuring a circle. The Pi was made before I was born.
William Jones was born in 1675 and died in 1749.
That is all I know about the Pi and William Jones.
Srinivasa Ramanujan - Anni and Aiden
In 1904 he received a merit scholarship in a local college and became more intelligent at Mathematics. He lost his interest in all other subjects. Finally in 1911 he published some of his results. In 1913 he sent his work to a Cambridge professor. He was given a scholarship by the University of Madrid.
He got famous by getting recognised for joining things together. He also won competitions several times... you never know when there could be an opportunity to become famous.
Emmy Noether - Tsehai, Annebel and Holly
Albert Einstein called Emmy the most "significant and creative female mathematician of all time.
Emmy was born 23 March 1882. She died on 14 April 1935. When she died she was 53 years old.She was a german mathematician. She was born to Jewish family. Emmy's dad was called Max. Amalie was Emmy's mum. Emmys contribution to Maths was Algebraic Geometry mainly, following in the footsteps of Alfred Clebsch. Her best known results are the Brill Noether Theorem and the residue or AF+ BG theorem: Several other theorems are associated with her enclosing MAX Noethers theorem.
Edward Witten - Theo and Lucas
Edward Witten was born 26th August 1951 in Baltimore. He was American. He was the son of Louis Witten. His siblings were Jesse and Celia Witten. Edward had 3 children - Daniela, Ilana and Rafael. He went to Pristine University. He became the first American to win the prize.
He discovered the Super String Theory. M-theory quantum gravity... there are two strings. That even involves the little strings inside you DNA. As everything is made up of these little strings, this theory tries to explain "Everything".
Earnest Rutherford - Lachie
He was born in New Zealand on 30th August 1817 and he died 19th October 1937. He went to university in Manchester after studining at Canterbury and Pioneered Nuclear Physics. He won a prize in Chemistry. He was keen on rugby.
Einstein - Jack and Jessie
Einstein won the nobel prize for his work. Albert Einstein is one of history's best thinkers. Best known for theory of reality and E=mc2. He rewrote the laws of nature. Even what very young he showed great ability in both maths and science. He imagined how the world would look if he could travel at the speed of light.
